On the Clock

About

I’m Matt Mason.

I went to school to be a pilot.

That was the plan I’d been handed — go to school, get a job, stay there forty years, retire. It sounded terrible. I just didn’t know there was anything else.

Then in college I found business and marketing, and I went all the way in. I read for days at a stretch. I spent tens of thousands of dollars of my own money on courses, sales training and strategic business programs. I found world-class mentors and wore them out with questions.

What I wanted was never really the how. It was the why. Why did that work? What’s underneath it? Give me the principle first, then the strategies that come out of the principle, then the tactics that come out of those. That’s still how I look at every business that sits down in front of me.

The part I like most is finding that two things nobody would put next to each other are actually the same thing. A pricing move that’s ordinary in one industry is sitting untouched in another. That’s usually where the breakthrough is hiding.

Since then I’ve worked with celebrity brands like Ariana Grande Fragrances and with one-person businesses run off a kitchen table. Fourteen years in direct response, and I’ve learned something from every one of them.

What I believe

Every business can get more out of what it already has.

Not more spending. Not more staff. Not a rebrand. The assets are already on the premises — the customer list, the traffic you already pay for, the relationships, the thing you sell and how it’s put together. Almost nobody is getting full value out of any of it, and the owner is the last person who can see it, because they’re standing inside it.

That’s the whole idea behind the show. Thirty minutes, a stranger’s business, and a number at the end.
